Nurturing the Arts Community

Nurturing the Arts Community

The mission statement of Sydenham Street United Church contains the following:

We are committed to nurturing and being nurtured by the arts within the congregation and wider community by encouraging use of our facilities by those engaged in any and all artistic endeavours.

Over the years many fine artists have performed at Sydenham Street United Church. These include Angela Hewitt, the McGarrigle Sisters, Tegan & Sara, Arlo Guthrie, Bruce Cockburn, Tom Jackson, Sarah Harmer, Sarah Sleen, Hawkesley Workman, Richie Havens, Measha Brueggergosman, Liona Boyd and Fred Penner.

You can see videos of some of these concerts on YouTube.

In carrying out this program we have partnered with groups such as Cantabile Choirs, Brasswerks, and the Kingston Choral Society. The photograph shows a concert featuring Brasswerks and the Choral Society.

In addition to making the Sanctuary available as a concert hall, our congregation organizes artistic events and invites the public. In the spring we participate in the Kingston Doors Open project. By participating in the Kingston Interconnected Art Tour we give local artists an opportunity to display their works. In September 2012 we held a very successful Gospel and Blues concert with Rev. Ernie Cox to raise money for the organ fund.
